In the olden days of the Internet (say, 8-10 years ago) you could get away with a basic, even amateurish website.

If you are going to have a bad website, you are probably better off having no website at all. Hard to believe, but it’s true. While a bad website at least gets your name in the search engines, it can also ruin your credibility. A hard to use website, for example, may push your potential customers over to the competition, while an amateurish website can convince potential customers that your business is simply not a serious one.

Here’s a few tips how you can avoid these website issues.

1) Make sure that you get your website when you are ready.
You should only invest in a company website when you are ready to spend time and money on the project.
In the olden days of the Internet (say, 8-10 years ago) you could get away with a basic, even amateurish website.

Here’s a few tips how you can avoid these website issues.

1) Make sure that you get your website when you are ready.
You should only invest in a company website when you are ready to spend time and money on the project. Only develop a website when you are ready to hire professionals to design it for you and you are ready to promote and update your website regularly.

2) Entrust your website to professionals.
You may know someone who understands basic HTML or WYSIWYG programs, but you need professionals with a good eye to develop your professional website for you. Yes your best friends son may be good at website design and can draw but think of it like this. If you wouldn’t hire that kid to run your business then why would you want him to create your website about your business.

3) Make your website part of an overall business plan.
Your website is not stand-alone. It should work with your overall business plan, marketing strategy, and branding plan. If you are not sure what you want your website to accomplish, you should determine this before setting a site up. Nothing is worse than the business website with no discernable goal.

4) Ensure that your website looks its best.
Your website should be professional, clean, and attractive. It should be simple to use, work well with and not have any broken pages/delays or glitches. It should work well on different computers and with different browsers, so that all your potential customers can read your marketing message. Check and recheck your website to ensure that it looks as good as it possibly can.

Follow these quick tips and don’t start your venture into the world of online business and having your business on the web with a bad or shall I say a crappy website. However if you are already that business that has a website and it isn’t performing then check out part 2 of my “Bad Website is Bad for Business part 2”

There is currently a brute-force login attack targeted at websites with WordPress. Due to the nature of this attack, there’s increased memory consumption on targeted servers. In some cases this has caused degradation of performance, and unresponsive servers.

The cause?

A high volume of http requests which can cause some servers to start
swapping memory to disk, and possibly run out of memory. The most impacted servers tend to be those with limited memory resources- this includes VPS instances, especially those with 1GB of RAM or less.

The SEO support team has been hard at work restoring service to managed servers which have been affected by this issue- and we’re actively engaged in reducing the impact of this event.

These days, a great danger lurks just a few clicks away: the online review. By Googling your company’s name, anyone can read and track your business’s performance – including mis-steps, poor service or less-than-stellar products that you’ve provided or sold.

Protecting your company’s reputation is now a 24-hour vigil. Negative reviews – whether they’re merited or not – can turn away potential customers and vendors, and reflect badly on your company’s brand.

The good news is that small-business owners can be proactive in securing positive reviews by asking satisfied customers to share their experiences. But what to do if it’s already too late and you are battling negative reviews that keeping your phone silent and your business down?

Reach out immediately to dissatisfied reviewers. Their negative comments don’t need to be the end of the conversation.

Small-business owners should attempt a dialogue, experts say, as complainers might improve the review or take down the post.

Be Responsible

In this age of ecological fragility, companies that show an interest in the state of the environment enjoy very good reputations. Start making changes in your business to make it more sustainable and eco-friendly, and then detail your efforts online so your visitors will know exactly what you are doing to better the planet we live on.

Stay and Get Engaged in the Community

Your business reputation begins at the local level, so make it as positive as possible by getting involved in community events. When you show a vested interest in the vitality of your own community, your local customers will greatly appreciate the effort, and this will instantly increase your reputation.

Always Be Consistent

Once you have started building a good reputation for your business, do not stop. Reputation management is a daily concern and just one slip can set your business a mile back.

Follow these tips as a daily part of your business, and your online business reputation will grow quickly and exponentially. As always a little effort goes a long way so remember the age old saying you get out what you put it.

“The Bounce”: This is not a new dance, or a revival of an old dance (sorry Harlem Shakers). This is the dreaded percentage of users who come to your site and then “bounce away” shortly after. Your bounce rate is only good if you have a one page website, and the last time I saw a one page website it was in highschool when I was learning how to write basic HTML or when in the affiliate marketer hey days- both of which are long gone.

These days, one to many website owners focus on the quantity rather than the quality of clicks. When they open up their Google Analytics dashboard, all they see is the big picture. Too bad the little picture is the quality of your clicks, which is far more important than how many people actually came. Good thing you can determine from the data what your … Read the rest

Good thing you can determine from the data what your bounce rate is and the number of visitors that leave immediately after landing on your site.

Now that you have this data, how do you change it for the better?
Scroll down to stop the bounce.

Speed
This pretty much goes without saying, but nothing really affects bounce rate like having a web page that takes more than 10 seconds to load.
If you fall in this category, please- stop being cheap and get better/faster hosting.

Just Say No To Pop-ups
Pop-ups annoy people, and pop-up ads are even more annoying.
Just say no to pop-ups, hover-ins or anything else that magically appears after/while the page is loading. In some rare cases they offer something worthwhile typically just add to the bounce by making people want to leave immediately.

Employ Good Design
Your content needs to be attractive; both in terms of graphical treatments and readability. Design for your target audience, which may not necessarily be the audience you already have, or at least not the majority of it. Design has become a legitimacy signal and the lack thereof can directly impact visitors and prospects perceptions of the quality of your business and services.

Use Intuitive Navigation For Important Items
Don’t make your visitors feel dumb (or think you’re dumb) for not providing them with clear and obvious paths to get the content they may be looking for. The most common reaction to not being able to find something that should be obvious is frustration – and then they leave.

Optimize For Intent
This is a more detailed take on information design, and ensuring that based on the keywords your visitors are using to get to your pages, you are serving them an experience that address their expectations. This is often talked about in paid search and display advertising, where the highest bounce rates are created from advertisers not closing the loop between the ad copy and the landing page copy and design. The experience needs to be consistent from start to finish or you risk breaking the user’s intent loop.

Be Mindful Of Ad Placement
Web users developed ad blindness and Google has also started penalizing pages that have too many ad units above the fold, and hint: they are looking for standard ad unit sizes.

Furthermore, from a publisher perspective, I can understand it’s great to squeeze an extra handful of impressions in per pageview, but if you look at some of the high performing niche ad networks, you will notice there publisher websites have a general lack of intrusive ads.

Cut Out Distractions
I wish I could say this goes without saying, but I still run into website on a weekly basis that autoplay audio and video. These things are distracting and annoying. I don’t want to hear “Over The Rainbow”, your theme song, or the song of the day. This not only slows the loading of a site but makes people hunt for the volume or pause button before they even start reading your anything on your site. Not a good plan.

Open External Links In New Windows
This is an incredibly simple concept that is still often overlooked, but if you’re going to link out to a resource on your website, make sure you have it open a new window instead of redirecting the user off your site. The best (and easiest way) to do this is to simply add target=”_blank” into the link’s <a> tag. So for example; <a href=”http://example.com” target=”_blank”>anchor text</a> (you’re welcome)

There are a number of factors that contribute to your bounce rate. Your, visitors might leave your site from the entrance page if there are site design or usability issues. Alternatively, visitors might also leave the site after viewing a single page if they’ve found the information they need on that one page, and had no need or interest in visiting other pages. However if none of these are the case follow the tips above and decrease your bounce rate.

I’ve been to many conferences, and look forward to attending a few more this year.

A common refrain I hear over and over again: ”Does Social Media Marketing really work?” Then I hear yes if you are a huge company like Coke, Pepsi or some other fortune 500… but what about Joes Pizza Shack and Bill’s Car Wash and the other “SMALL Guys”. To some this may be a no brainer but to others they struggle with this question. Well I hate to say it so bluntly but yet Social Media Marketing Really Works!

Many years ago advertisers lost control of the media when the Internet gave all the target audiences the power to choose what was marketed to them. So traditional advertising can be asked the same question, “Does it really work” , however with Social Media there is clear misunderstanding of what Social Media really is and how to make it work for you. I have gathered from the internet and other bloggers some of the reasons why most Social Media marketing campaigns fail.

Lack of Clear Goals:
If you’re sharing content on social media networks without a clearly defined end goal, then your efforts are going to be in vain point blank and simple. Social media—or any marketing that you do for your business—you need to choose an intended outcome. Do you want to increase website traffic? Encourage people to sign up for your mailing list? Get exposure for your book? Improve brand recognition? Your goals become the target that you aim for. No goal equals no real way to measure success.

Treat it as an Obligation:
If social media is just another item you feel you have to do each day and you resent it, that’s going to come across with your audience. The people and companies that are doing well with social media are the ones who embrace it and enjoy it. Imagine if you treated your clients like they were simply an obligation—they would certainly notice. Find a way to see the value and the fun in social media and allow that to shine through.

Not Blogging:
Blogging is the heart and soul of every solid social media strategy without it you have no heartbeat. You need great content to share, and a reason to bring people back to your site to read more and engage with you. Ideally you should update your blog a minimum of two to three times per week, and then share each new post with your networks.

Not Engaging:
If you aren’t responding to your audience, appreciating them, and responding to their questions, then they will go elsewhere. Also, it’s not just about broadcasting your message. You will see far more results when you like and share other people’s content, mention them in your posts, and even recommend their products and services. Its kind of like follow friday on Twitter if do not know what that is Google it then blog about it.

Failure to Build Your Audience:
With social media, you have to actively recruit followers and fans. For Twitter, I believe in following back the people who follow you. This is good social etiquette, while also letting your audience know that you’re paying attention to them too. For Facebook, you can invest in ads to help get more “Likes” on your page. For LinkedIn, import contacts from your database and proactively send connection requests to people you know. For G+, add people to your circles. The point is that you need to be proactive in building your audience and not just sit back and wait for them to find you.

Partial Effort:
One of the biggest complaints ever about social media is that it takes too much time, which leaves people either ignoring it or trying to work it into their schedules when convenient. But an inconsistent effort leads to inconsistent results and inconsistent results leaves you with you know nothing to show for you work. If you commit to engaging with your social media networks on a consistent basis, you could discover a tremendous return on your time investment, and you’d realize it should be a top priority.

Take this information and go be successful, go out swinging or aim for bleachers and all the other cliches that people say. Now go be social and stop reading this.

So we spoke on why Social Media campaigns fail but you’re over that (pat yourself on the back a few times) so what’s next?

What usually happens next is you ask yourself this question “How do you know whether your social media marketing is paying off?”

First of all, the most valuable metrics won’t be the same for every social media marketing campaign. Goals, experience, and focus may vary from company to company. Keep in mind that no one metric is proof of social media success and failure – but taken as a whole, there are some fairly good indicators of how your efforts are faring. So lets say your business is off to a great start. You know your market, you’ve developed a great presence, and you’re keeping your audience engaged and you know your social media efforts are playing a significant role.

Naturally, some are more effective than others—but how do you really know what’s working or what’s not really working?

Here are some metrics and metric ideas on how you can measure your success.

1. Number and growth rate of followers
The number of followers you have on your social media accounts can reflect the amount of success your campaigns are having. Of course, there is not a single, definite number that defines success; what might be considered a paltry number for a large corporation with an extensive and long-running social media campaign may be an excellent showing for a smaller business just getting started in social media. Some industries also lend themselves to naturally attract more followers than others. When in doubt, try comparing yourself to competitors or other companies in your industry to get an idea of a good benchmark.

Many times, monitoring the growth rate of followers is just as important – if not more so – than simply the number of followers. This can be especially true for companies in the earlier stages of social media marketing. A steady rate of growth can be a sign that your campaigns are succeeding, while stagnation or loss of followers can signal that it’s time to take another look at your efforts.

2. Follower Interaction/ Content Sharing
You may be posting content on your social media accounts and gathering followers, but are they interacting? Fan engagement and interaction – such as “likes” and comments on Facebook and Pinterest and mentions on Twitter – can indicate that not only are your followers receiving your message, but they’re also absorbing it and interested enough to respond to it. Follower interactions show that they care about what you and your company have to say and have moved from passive listeners to active participants who are more tuned in.

When you post on social media accounts, you are sending messages that reach your immediate fans and followers. When they share this content, however, not only is it a sign that they think that what you post is interesting and valuable, but they are also helping to spread the word about your company to others, helping you reach a whole new group of potential followers – and potential customers. Keep track of your social media analytics, such as those provided by Facebook and Twitter, to get an idea of what your fans are sharing.

4. Traffic Driven To Your Web Site
Your social media efforts should ultimately be driving customers to your website, and your site’s analytics will be able to tell you if they are. Keep an eye on the traffic on your Web site that is referred from social media sites, and note the change over time. It’s also important to track other metrics such as bounce rate – the amount of time a customer stays on your Web site – and which pages your social media followers visit on your site.

5. Customer Conversion
While increased social media visitors and activity are a great sign, they don’t necessarily give you the information that major decision-makers in your company may want to see: the impact on the bottom line. Simply tracking any growth in sales as you increase your social media efforts is one effective way of showing a correlation. For more detailed and concrete numbers, you can also turn to your site’s analytics to track social media visitors’ traffic on your checkout pages.

Brick-and-mortar stores will also care about traffic driven directly into stores. This can be gauged by simply having cashiers ask customers at the registers about where they learned about the store, or by tracking the redemption of coupons offered exclusively on social media accounts.

Hopefully some of these help you in measuring your success of your social media campaign. Got some other tips share them below.

Have you gotten a collage of photos fill up your Facebook or Twitter feed, seen one of those funny pictures with someone you know with a crazy filter well guess what we all have. Guess what again? It probably came from Instagram.

Instagram’s developers describe it as a “quirky,” “fun” and “beautiful” way to share photos: You can snap a picture on your mobile device, apply a vintage-inspired filter, and then instantly push that content out to multiple social media channels simultaneously.

Beneath the app’s playful appeal is a powerful way to market your services and connect with customers. Using Instagram, small business owners can instantly put a face to their business and watch their customer relationships and sales flourish as a result.

The visual web has taken over, with Instagram helping to lead the trend. Now part of Facebook and with over 100 million users, the popular photo-sharing app has turned regular users into amateur photographers.

The content that Instagram users are generating and consuming allows many brands and e-commerce sites a way to harness the power of photo sharing to increase their customer base and get valuable marketing data. These six simple tips are a starting point for any brand success on Instagram.

1) Create your account and set up an editorial calendar.
Images are a great way to communicate with your clients, and that makes Instagram a great distribution channel for your most visually appealing content. Whenever you’re releasing a new product line or hosting an event, a single photo can communicate more effectively than the longest press release.

But like with other forms of content marketing, you shouldn’t limit it to these events. Set up an editorial calendar (posting at least a couple of photos per week could be a good start) and define what type of content you’ll create. A good example is Nike, a company that regularly displays a mix of their own products, events, sports team gear or customers wearing their product.

2) Pick a series of hashtags and focus on these.
Hashtags are the best way to categorize your content on Instagram, but also the easiest way to build a brand on the service. Instead of using a spray-and-pray strategy for your hashtag, you should define a few hashtags and stick to them. This will help your followers to remember and identify them with your brand.

3) Interact/comment on your customers’ photos about you.
Whether you are actively engaging or not, your clients could already be talking about your products on Instagram, so there is no better place to start the conversation than where your customers are right?

4) Merge offline/online.
The mobile nature of Instagram enables a level of interaction that simply isn’t possible on other platforms. This gives you the opportunity to engage with your users around specific locations or events, which is a great opportunity to blend your offline brand building efforts with your digital presence.

5) Display photos from your customers on your products.
A few years ago, Google Vice President Jim Lecinsky, wrote a book called “The Zero Moment of Truth” where he explains in detail how the Internet has changed consumer behavior. In this book, Jim shows that since consumers now research online about your brand before buying, you should embrace product reviews and comments about your product as a new marketing opportunity.

The same concept can be applied to Instagram. As the web is becoming more visual, what better way to help your potential customers research your product than showing other happy customers using it?

6) Combination Marketing.
Finally, take all of these tips and combine them together try using 2 of these at a time or use all of them at the same time if they apply to your business and see what works. The best thing of all? Instagram is free to use.

Now take some pictures, use a cool filter and tag away like your business depends on it. It’s not that serious, but you can create a serious buzz on Instagram. Good luck!
