Once upon a time, there was this invisible thing called the Internet. This contraption had really basic properties that seemed almost mystical in a sense, because you had to be really smart to build something on it. Back then, you could put really cheap things in your Internet house, like stuffed keywords, hidden keywords and just having your keyword in your domain name. Even if your “home” was built really crappy, it still performed well and brought many people to come visit who would occasionally leave you money for something they found interesting in your home that was probably junk.
Guess what? It’s 2 decades later, and that crap doesn’t work anymore.
Many times, this is what happens:
You sign up with the network marketing company or you’ve created some site that is going to sell the next best thing since the “Shamwow”.
You’re all set to get rocking and rolling, so you implement your Internet marketing strategy. You’re excited, because you know it’s going to work. You start to imagine what you’re going to do with all the money that will be lining your pockets. This excitement gives you the patience to wait a few days because you know your victory is going to be sweet. However, your victory is never materialized and days go by and you keep paying that hosting bill all while your website is just circling the drain. Right before you let your online business goes to the big online business graveyard in the sky you wonder…”Where did I go wrong?”
Well, let’s find out, shall we? Here are 5 common Internet Marketing No No’s:
Don’t overuse keywords.
On your website, keywords should be visible and relevant to your business. Hiding keywords or using those that are clearly unrelated to your business is an easy way to get caught using bad practices and be penalized.
Spamming other sites with links to your site.
Google will penalize against websites for spamming other sites with links to their own website. This also applies to spamming the comment section of another website with frivolous comments that just have links back to your site.
Purchasing SEO services that guarantee you # 1 ranking.
There are good SEO agencies out there, and then there are a lot of bad ones that will rank you for your domain name or some other un-searched keyword. Steer clear of these SEO companies or products that make bold claims.
SEO is process.
If you do your research and formulate a plan and start on it on the 1st of the month, do not give up on the 7th of the month. SEO and internet marketing is a process and takes time. You need to build momentum and make adjustments to keep that momentum going.
Don’t throw in the towel too early!
Stay focused on your target.
If your website is about dog-walking, don’t start talking about cat-whispering out of nowhere. You have most likely spent time and effort into creating and planning out what a good dog walking website should be- do not throw that hard earned work away. By staying focused, you will constantly be identifying with the target market you want to reach.
Just a couple of tips and ideas. Hope they help! If you have some of your own, please let us know in the comment section.
